They were allowed to be violent, destructive and threaten classmates, but instead of being removed from contact with other students who were to be their victims, the two were coddled.<br /><br />Jackie Robinson had the character and courage to endure and surmount far worse than the bullying that is claimed to have pushed Harris and Klebolt over the edge. Robinson didn’t give up or explode. Neither Harris nor Klebolt had character or courage. Bullying didn’t push them over the edge.<br /><br />When will we start protecting the rest of us from the bullies and crazies?<br /><br />Disclosure: I’m a practical, pragmatic coach and consultant. Then all the sex-scandals with minors, and all the outbursts of violence.<br /><br />Don't get me wrong, I had amazing teachers when I was growing up. I respected them all and liked most of them. Aside from that, I think it does go overboard in the form of dress code. Our school spends WAY too much time worrying about colors and tucked in shirts than it ought to, in my opinion. As for other safety measures, like locker searches, visitor passes, drug dogs, etc...I see no problem with that. Bomb threats were a dime a dozen at my school near Philly. Just about every other day someone wrote on a bathroom wall about killing people. Never happened. Teachers take their jobs to be a positive role model around students. We are not out to seek some sort of vengeance against teens. If anything, we want to protect them and their futures. I agree that many security measures have tighted up. (And Columbine might be responsible for that) But I feel safer knowing we are taking these precautions rather than taking the risk of not being safe. I have heard of more teachers receiving minor discipline for actions that have gotten students expelled. Who is to say that teachers aren't more dangerous than the students.
