It only makes sense. I taught at an elementary school for several years. During my tenure, we caught students with drugs, knives, a loaded gun, a screwdriver, porn magazines, etc... This is just elementary. If I was allowed, I would definitely keep mine locked up in my desk. My area isn't the best and teachers become stressed. I steer clear of the Security guards all 20 of them in my school already. I don't think the teachers have any ill intent but if one just snaps.... This was not the best idea in my opinion, and Micheal, if the this is public news then the kids and others are going to find out whether they can physically see the actual weapon or not. Which in my case makes thing worse. You know your teacher is carrying a weapon SOMEWHERE but have no idea where. I would be paranoid. It may be just 'cause of my area but that is NOT a friendly teaching enviornment for me. I doubt that if there really was a situation where weilding the weapon was necessary, the teachers would be able to do much. What exactly are your credentials on the subject of concealing things from children?
Tell me why I should trust you.

I have seven years' experience teaching in public schools, at the high school and elementary levels. Children in a playground are very different than children in a classroom; they have plenty else to capture their interest in a playground, not so much in a classroom. They get bored quite easily. I'd also like to know exactly how do you know you've succeeded in "concealing" things from them? That they didn't come up and tell you doesn't mean didn't notice, it just means they though it was more fun to get on the slide than go talk to you.

The younger children tend to be more innocent, but frighteningly observant (you would be amazed at the things they have noticed about my physical appearance and my clothing - and that's just what they've bothered to share out loud).

The older kids are going to be watching, and they will find out. And they're the ones who are going to think it's a funny "prank" to take the teacher's gun away.

As a teacher, I find it apalling that a district would make a teacher responsible in a confrontation with an armed attacker (which is what the district is doing: they are expecting the teachers to be the police force and take care of any violent threats). If I were interested in that kind of job, I would have gone into law enforcement, not education.

No, but in an emergency you could provide first aid untill professionals arrive, possibly saving lives, no?

Honestly? No. I've gone through CPR certification at least three times, for various reasons. If the day after I'd taken the course I had been asked to perform CPR on someone, I doubt I would have been able to do it correctly. Nerves, pressure, panic, fear would all have impaired my ability to remember how many breaths I was supposed to do after how many chest compressions - and that's assuming I would have figured out where to push on the person's chest in the first place, instead of pushing his stermun into his lungs.

Now, I don't know what CHL training entails, nor do I know what the district's training will entail. Perhaps the training is incredibly comprehensive and the teachers will have several refresher courses throughout the year... but then that makes me wonder when those teachers will find time to actually teach.

Ok - so now it all makes sense, we need to hire mo...

Ok - so now it all makes sense, we need to hire more minimum wage security guards who probably have less knowledge about using a firearm than a person who has taken the time to pass a CCDW course and obtain their permit. This way, when someone does enter the school, intent on mayhem, they know who to shoot first. Knock off the security guard sleeping in the office and they are home free.

I prefer the idea that no one knows who has a firearm (Hence the meaning of the work "Concealed") Then we can protect our kids. Wake up people, why is that so many people fear a man with a gun. More damage is done by lax drug policies, drunk drivers, and sexual deviants than all the guns in the country.

I really can't stand the people that are making te...

I really can't stand the people that are making teachers seem like if a child disrupts the class then they are going to shoot them. That is insane! Don't we send our children to the very same school every single day? If you are so mistrusting why are your children in the school? They are not saying, "Hey why don't you keep your gun in your top desk drawer!" Two?), but that does not a security guard/police officer make.
